of Datotel. ���It���s something we���re constantly monitoring and trying to improve.��� That makes it especially important for Brown and his colleagues at Datotel to forecast their future energy needs. They need to meet the demands of customers, of course. But they also need to ensure that their company has the right amount of power in the right place at the right time ��� and without overinvesting in underutilized infrastructure, Brown adds. Brown says his company���s dialogues with clients and employees alike are moving from ���high-level one-off��� conversations about energy and sustainability to more indepth and informed conversations. ���They���re looking for more details, more information and more guidance ��� all supported by real data,��� he adds. That data is coming, in part, from CA DCIM. For Datotel, the solution provides both real-time and historical data that helps the company bill its customers accurately for the energy consumed in the company���s colocation facility, and identify spikes in energy usage that might affect the continuity of services to customers. ���This extends beyond the data center facility and servers down through the end-user devices themselves,��� Brown says. Using CA DCIM has also transformed the way Datotel manages its data center, Brown says. Now the company can boost energy efficiency while also ensuring that its customers have visibility into energy usage, because the technology provides the granular, real-time information on the energy consumed at all parts of the power-delivery system down through the end power circuit. Wyndham Tools Up for Sustainability Rising energy costs are an ongoing challenge for Wyndham Worldwide, one of the world���s largest hospitality companies. Wyndham, based in Parsippany, N.J., has received requests from shareholders and customers alike to run an energy-efficient business as costs continue to rise. ���In markets that are not regulated, the energy costs can go up dramatically year over year,��� says Faith Taylor, Wyndham���s Senior VP of Sustainability and Innovation. ���For example, in the Caribbean, the kilowattper-hour cost can be four times higher than it is in parts of the United States.��� Many of Wyndham���s sustainability efforts are generated through IT. On the desktop, the company is replacing older PCs with newer Energy Star-certified devices. It is also installing sleep software ��� which enables users to shut down computers at specific times ��� throughout the organization. ���We���re also using virtual resources, which overall reduces our environmental footprint,��� says Darius Ryals, Wyndham���s Group VP of Infrastructure Shared Services. Wyndham has launched the first phase of a program to virtualize the IT infrastructure. By early this year, the company hopes to reduce 208 physical servers to just 16. Wynd�� ham is also buying energy-efficient servers. Wyndham further intends to achieve a 12 percent reduction of its overall carbon emissions by 2016. It implemented the Wyndham Green Toolbox in 2010, a custom eco-software program that lets the Wyndham portfolio of businesses unify sustainability tracking and measurement. The Green Toolbox also gives users resources to reduce energy use, including surveys, lists ��� ur clients and O employees expect us to be leaders in sustainable business practices.��� ���Darren McGann Sustainability Manager | KPMG of initiatives and products, and calculators for reducing energy footprints. In 2011, Wyndham cut carbon emissions in its global facilities by 5 percent. ���Prior to the implementation of the Toolbox, our process of collecting sustainability data was fragmented, inefficient and difficult to implement across our diverse portfolio of facilities,��� Taylor says. ���But now we have a common metric and view of the global portfolio.��� Energy Tops KPMG���s List KPMG LLP, the audit, tax and advisory firm, is another company that has made sustainability a top priority. ���Our clients and employees expect us to be leaders in sustainable business practices,��� says Sustainability Manager Darren McGann. KPMG committed itself five years ago to creating an industry-recognized sustainability program. Called Living Green, the program determines the environmental impact of services provided by KPMG to its clients. The Living Green team helped develop an Engagement Emissions Calculator to estimate the carbon emissions of KPMG���s client services. ���It���s a valuable tool that enables us to provide a clear picture of the environmental impact of the services delivered to clients, who often have sustainability goals for their vendors,��� McGann says. Another IT-related sustainability effort at KPMG is called Green Travel Advisor. Created in 2010, it encourages employees to seek IT alternatives to long-distance travel. In its first year alone, the program saved more than $2 million, in part due to a 95 percent increase in the use of video�� onferencing. c KPMG staff have avoided some 1,080 roundtrip flights, representing more than 5 million air miles not flown and more than 1,360 metric tons of carbon dioxide not spewed into the atmosphere, the company says. KPMG���s data center is energy efficient, too. The firm has incorporated a 720-kilowatt, natural gas-fired combined heat and power (CHP) system into its data center design that requires about 20 percent less fuel than typical grid electricity systems. ���Our experience,��� says McGann, ���has shown that with the CIO championing sustainable IT efforts, we can accomplish our goals without having to add additional layers of management.��� That���s an energy savings any organization can appreciate. n Bob Violino (@BobViolino) is a freelance writer based in Massapequa Park, N.Y 2013 ��� Smart Enterprise 39
