Editor's Perspective ® The New Innovation Farewell, technology for technology's sake. Welcome, IT that enables and empowers business innovation. a Innovation for the IT community is like Mom and apple pie. Everyone in IT loves innovation. Everyone in IT strives to innovate. And no one in IT dares to say a single bad word against innovation. What's wrong with that, you ask? Nothing, really. The trouble is, it doesn't go far enough. IT innovation, important as it is, is merely the beginning. The true end goal of innovation is the creation and empowerment of innovative business services. These business services help enterprises boost productivity ... enter new markets ... intro- duce new products and services ... control and cut b costs ... and ultimately grow both revenue and profits. In today's "do more with less" economy, that's innovative, indeed. We at Smart Enterprise understand the essential need for business innovation, too. In fact, that's the theme for this, our 17th issue. The issue's lead feature, "The Road to Business Innovation," details how CIOs must not only innovate for the business, but also create a culture of innovation within both the IT organization and the larger enterprise. Our case study shows how First Data Corp., a leading payment processor, uses cloud computing, mobile devices and other IT innovations to enable equally innovative business services. In Smart Trends, you'll learn why your next job title — like CIOs at Citigroup, Coca-Cola, DuPont and General Electric — may be Chief Innovation Officer. And in our Smart Viewpoint interview, Thomas Koulopoulos, author of a new book on innovation and cloud computing, explains why good ideas are only a first step toward true IT-business innovation. How about you? Are you using IT to help create and empower innovative business services? Or are you still waiting?
